sleep
- This hotel originally opened in 1957 as the Thunderbird Motel but was completely renovated and re-opened as the Trailborn in January 2025.
- There are just two room types: one king and two queen (with an option of connecting these two room types).
- King rooms have a daybed that could sleep a small child.
- Some rooms have tubs — if it’s important to you, request one.
- This hotel is right on the road, so you may hear a bit of road or train noise (just embrace the Route 66 charm).
- They have a limited number of rollaways and pack ’n plays, so if you need one, make sure to request in advance. (Note: rooms will be a tight squeeze with these, but it’s doable.)
- Surprise your kids with their in-room camping experience.
- Rooms are a bit short on outlets — so if you plan to plug in several devices for your kids (night lights, baby monitors, etc.), you may want to bring a power strip.
- Rooms don't have outside space, but the hotel is compact, so your baby monitor may stretch to the pool and restaurant.
- As of February 2025, this hotel is part of Marriott Bonvoy.
play
- There’s a seasonal outdoor pool and a hot tub. The pool isn't huge, but it's big enough.
- Bikes are free to borrow. They do not have kid bikes.
- Outdoor games court features bocce ball and cornhole, plus a dedicated kids’ play area.
- Camp Hall serves as the social hub with live music, line dancing, Wild West Bingo, movie nights, and games (shuffleboard, darts, board games, etc.).
- Custom scavenger hunt boards are available for kids to explore the property and nearby attractions (and they get a prize when they complete it).
- This hotel is a great jumping-off point for adventure: the Grand Canyon is less than an hour away, and it’s very close to Bearizona and right next door to Canyon Coaster Adventure Park.
- Guided tours of the Grand Canyon and Sedona leave from the hotel; if you have kids under 12, you’ll need to book the private tour option (so they can tailor the amount of hiking/exploration to the ages and abilities of your kids).
- Families love the Grand Canyon Railway (leaves 1 mile from the hotel).
- In the summer, the town of Williams puts on a fun rodeo on Friday and Saturday nights.
eat
- Miss Kitty’s Steakhouse is a delicious Southwestern-focused restaurant. It has outside seating, or you can order food to go to eat in Camp Hall or by the pool.
- They no longer offer a free breakfast buffet, but often have promotional rates with breakfast included.
- Williams has numerous historic Route 66 diners and restaurants within walking distance. Nanys Tacos is a great nearby option for families.
- There’s no room service, but they do have a small grab-and-go market open 24/7.
- Evening s’mores by the outdoor fire pit are a family favorite activity, though you have to purchase the s'mores kits (available at the front desk).
