sleep
- Every room has at least a partial ocean view. Let the hotel know if you prefer sunrise or sunset.
- Balcony type varies. Lanai rooms are worth it for the larger outdoor space and daybed. Other rooms have a small balcony (fits two chairs) or a Juliet balcony.
- King Ocean View rooms include a sofa bed but no bathtub. King Ocean Front rooms have a bathtub but no sofa bed (though a rollaway can be added).
- No suites have door separation between the bedroom and living room. If that matters, book connecting rooms or a villa. The hotel tries to guarantee connecting rooms or bungalows at booking.
- Ocean Front Suites are large and open-plan, with either a king bed or two queens plus a sofa bed. The two-queen version sleeps a family of six.
- The Ali’i Suite also sleeps six. It has a partial wall between the bedroom and living room (no door) and a large walk-in closet that can fit a crib.
- Bungalows are worth the splurge for more space, privacy, and service. They include access to a quieter bungalow pool (kids allowed). Two-queen bungalows sleep six (two queens plus a sofa bed).
- Rooms were renovated in 2021, and Ritz took over in 2024. Many guests feel rooms — aside from the bungalows — don’t fully meet Ritz standards.
- The 3- and 4-bedroom ocean-view villas are a more economical option for large groups. They vary in design and feel less polished than the hotel rooms and bungalows, but offer more space and full access to resort amenities.
play
- This is a big, activity-heavy North Shore resort surrounded by ocean and mountains. The setting and sheer number of things to do are the reason to book, especially for multi-generational families.
- The property is large and stroller-friendly, with walking and biking trails throughout.
- There are beaches on both sides of the resort. Kuilima Cove is the best option for families, with calm, protected water for swimming and snorkeling. Other areas are better for surfing, tidepooling, and water activities.
- The beaches are great, but can get crowded at peak times (open to the public), so it doesn’t always feel like a luxury beach experience.
- There are three heated pools: a main pool, a kids pool with two slides and shallow ledges, and a smaller adults-only pool.
- Pool chairs can fill up, shade can be limited, and the adults-only pool is close to the main pool, so it’s not especially quiet.
- There’s no drop-off kids club, but there are plenty of structured activities for kids, including the Keiki Passport program, lei making, hula lessons, farm tours, and crafts.
- The surf school is a standout and one of the best on Oahu. Kids can even surf with a dog.
- Horseback riding is another highlight, with pony rides for younger kids (6 and under) and oceanfront trail rides for older kids (age 7+).
- Other on-site experiences include kayaking, snorkeling (day and night), stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, biking, golf, pickleball, and tennis.
- It’s about a 10-minute drive to Pipeline and other famous North Shore surf breaks if you want to explore beyond the property.
- Service is friendly and helpful but more relaxed than a typical Ritz, reflecting the North Shore surf culture.
eat
- You can easily stay on property for all meals, but food is expensive.
- All restaurants have the option of dining outside.
- The coffee shop has great ocean views and opens at 5:30am
- Alaia is the main restaurant, and breakfast reviews are generally strong.
- Lei Lei’s is located at the golf course (they will drive you over in golf carts).
- The Cowboy Luau, located near the stables, gets good feedback for its more intimate size.
- Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi is great and has a strong kids menu.
- The on-site market is well stocked with snacks, groceries, and local gifts.
- Club access can help offset the high cost of dining.
- You are not walkable to off-property dining. There are some great local casual restaurants and food trucks within driving distance.
