tips and watch-outs from families who've been there

sleep

  • The Fields Cottage (king or two queens) works best for families.
  • Prefer a tent? Choose between glamping (private bathroom, electricity, heat, A/C) or basic (king bed, no electricity, and shared public restroom).
  • No rooms have bathtubs.
  • Wi-Fi is unavailable in rooms but is accessible in the main restaurant.
  • Pack ’n Plays are free; cots are $25 per night.
  • Rooms do not have locks, but the property feels very safe.

play

  • Perfect if you want to be (slightly) disconnected in nature with your family.
  • In summer, kids can pick fresh blueberries on the property — free and plentiful.
  • Outdoor pool is open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend; it isn’t heated, so expect chilly water early in the season.
  • Lake Michigan’s beach is a 3-mile drive or a 40-minute bike ride away.
  • Rainy day? The lodge has a stash of board games to keep kids entertained.
  • Expect to see wildlife—you’re in the woods! Don’t worry, there are no bears in the area.
  • Staff are friendly and welcoming to families (the owner has four kids).

eat

  • Breakfast is included (starts at 8:30am); coffee is available starting at 6 a.m.
  • Thursday – Saturday features a prix fixe dinner (fresh and delicious; reservations required). Other days offer small plates, sandwiches, and salads. There's no kids menu.
  • The on-site market sells grab-and-go items for lunch. If you want to picnic (you should!), they’ll pack a basket for you.
  • For additional dining options, head into town.
  • Don’t forge to roast s’mores at your personal fire pit.
  • Keep your snacks in the provided cooler so animals don’t get into them.
