sleep
- This is a very large, spread-out resort. Room location matters. Some rooms are a 5–10+ minute walk to pools and restaurants.
- Rooms are split on either side of the lobby. The Shipwreck Wing (pool side) is closer to pools and activities but more lively, while the Poipu Wing is quieter and more removed.
- Located in Poipu on the south side of Kauai. This is one of the sunniest areas of the island, especially in winter.
- All rooms have a private lanai (outdoor space).
- Standard rooms are spacious and flexible for families (king + sleeper chair or two queens + sleeper chair), with strong availability of connecting rooms.
- Pool Suites have a king bed and a full sleeper sofa.
- Ocean View Suites and Standard Suites have a separate living room, but the sofa is not a pullout.
- Royal Suite sleeps 6 with a king bedroom, queen sleeper sofa, trundle/daybed, large walk-in closet (fits a crib, no door), and dining table.
- Alii Suites can expand into 2- or 3-bedroom configurations.
- The Presidential Suite has one bedroom, a full kitchen, and a living room that can sleep multiple kids.
- “Ocean View” means you see the ocean upon entry. “Partial Ocean View” means you see it from the balcony, at minimum.
- Free self-service laundry (detergent included) is available on-site.
- Arrival/departure lounge with seating and showers is available for early arrivals or late flights.
- Wristbands are used instead of room keys.
- There’s a hotel app to help you navigate the property.
- The property is beautiful but runs like a large resort. Don’t expect highly personalized service.
play
- The pool complex is the main draw. It includes a lazy river, waterslide, multiple pools, a small adults-only pool, and a saltwater lagoon that functions like a built-in water park.
- Pools get crowded. Go early if you want chairs in prime locations.
- The saltwater lagoon has a sandy shore and zero-entry access. It is much calmer and easier for younger kids than the ocean.
- The beach is scenic but not swimmable for kids due to strong currents. It’s a good spot to watch surfers and cliff jumping.
- Poipu Beach is a 4-minute drive or ~25-minute walk. There is a lifeguard on duty, and you may see turtles or a Hawaiian monk seal.
- This is a very family-heavy resort, especially during school breaks.
- There is no kids club, but babysitting is available through a local provider.
- Free cultural activities (lei making, hula, ukulele) are included in the resort fee, though some require advance reservations.
- Weekly activity schedule is available.
- The resort fee includes 1 hour per day of racket sports court time (tennis or pickleball), but there is only one tennis court and one pickleball court.
- Guests get a discount at the nearby Poipu Bay Golf Course, with shuttle service available.
- The activities desk is helpful for booking off-site excursions.
- The property is stroller-friendly but very large. Expect a lot of walking.
- The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail starts nearby and runs along the coastline to Mahaulepu Beach.
- Kids love the parrots in the lobby and the twice-daily koi fish feeding.
eat
- Breakfast (Ilima Terrace, coffee shop, and room service) starts at 6am.
- The breakfast buffet is a highlight. It is extensive, and kids 5 and under eat free.
- You can easily eat most meals on-property, but food is expensive. Many families mix in off-site meals or bring snacks.
- Tidepools is the standout restaurant and worth booking in advance.
- Make dinner reservations early. Popular restaurants book out quickly.
- Seaview Terrace is a good casual option for coffee, quick breakfast, and light bites.
- Hale Nalu (poolside) is great for lunch or an early dinner.
- Stevenson’s Library is a fun option if your kids like sushi, with simple rolls available.
- Kids menus are widely available with familiar options.
- The luau (Wednesdays and Saturdays) is fun and well-produced, but food reviews are mixed relative to the price.
- Room service stops at 11pm. Plan ahead for late arrivals or hungry kids.
- Nearby Poipu restaurants are a good option for more variety or lower prices.
- Many families stock up on snacks before arriving.
- Food is expensive (this is Hawaii).
