sleep
- This hotel is open seasonally, from mid-May to late October.
- There’s a wide range of room options—from standard rooms to 5-bedroom vacation homes—so you’ll be able to find something that meets your family’s needs. Rooms aren’t anything fancy, but they’re clean and functional (all have kitchenettes or kitchens, some have laundry).
- Studios and suites (up to 4 bedrooms) are in the main building.
- Ground floor rooms provide easy access to a lawn for your kids to run around, third floor rooms have ocean views.
- Some rooms have cute twin bed sleeping nooks for your kids.
- East and West Chop Suites don’t have a door separating the bedroom and living room.
- Standalone cottages (1 and 2 bedroom) are convenient to the pool and restaurant.
- Garden cottages have just one bedroom (plus a living room) but can sleep a bunch of kids: they include a pull-down twin bed in the master bedroom, two more in the living room, a sleeper sofa, a kitchen, and an outdoor gas grill.
- The two-bedroom Lilly Pulitzer Cottage is also great for families and even has a roof deck (but avoid it if you don’t like a lot of color!).
- Vacation homes (usually require a weekly rental) are privately owned, and some are a bit farther away but come with access to resort amenities (note: no daily housekeeping).
- There’s a lot of history behind this hotel (originally opened in 1968); the current version opened in 2000.
- You can combine a stay here with one at their sister property on Nantucket (The Nantucket Hotel—also very family-friendly!).
play
- Family-owned and it shows—staff are warm and welcoming.
- During the summer, there’s a free kids’ club from 9am-12pm (ages 3+ if potty-trained). Kids are split into four age groups: ages 7–12 swim as part of camp, while younger kids do land activities.
- Evening sessions (Tues, Thurs, Fri 5:30–9:30 PM) cost $45 and give parents a chance for a kid-free dinner.
- In early May and September, they offer a toddler program with parent-participation activities.
- The main family pool is great for families. It's fenced in and has an attached kids pool - making it perfect for families with kids of different ages and swimming abilities. There are also some cabanas if you need extra shade.
- There’s also a gym, wooden pirate ship playground, sports courts, and a second pool at the activities center.
- Life-size chess, a turtle pond, and lawn games (corn hole, ladder golf, soccer, frisbee, wiffle ball) keep kids busy.
- Every afternoon, you can ride in one of their antique cars (fire truck or bus)—a hit with young kids.
- Tennis clinics are free for kids (as young as 5); pickleball and private lessons are also available.
- The nearby public beach (South Beach) is a 5-minute scenic walk. The hotel loans out chairs and umbrellas (but you’ll carry them to the beach). Lifeguards are on duty, but the ocean still may be a bit rough for young kids.
- Martha's Vineyard is great for biking. No bikes on-site, but they partner with a local rental shop that delivers (including kid bikes, trailers, baby seats, and tag-alongs).
- Oyster farm tours are available (not recommended for kids under 8).
- For babysitting, they recommend a local service (https://www.summersitters.com/request).
eat
- Breakfast starts at 7:30 AM at The Dunes (main restaurant), with ocean views and a sea breeze.
- The Dunes is also great for dinner and even has a staffed kids activity corner during mealtime.
- Every Wednesday, they host a lively clambake on the lawn with live music (kids 4 and under eat free).
- The General Store opens at 7:30 and has grab-and-go breakfast and lunch as well as snacks.
- The Poolside grill is a great, casual option for lunch. Or, you can have the General Store pack you a picnic for the beach.
- Fresh baked cookies and lemonade are in the lobby each afternoon; s’mores in the courtyard in the evening.
- You can’t walk to other restaurants, but a water taxi runs to Edgartown for dining.
