tips and watch-outs from families who've been there

sleep

  • Earthy, calming rooms with a strong eco-luxury vibe — think reclaimed materials, neutral tones, and views of Hanalei Bay or the lush mountains.
  • Standard rooms come in many different view options (mountain, pool, ocean view, ocean front) and bed options (king or two queen). Recommend booking a terrace room so you have a place to hang while your kids nap. If you don’t have one, you’ll still be able to fully open up your windows for fresh air.
  • King rooms have a large sofa that could sleep a child, and queen rooms have a window seat that may also work as a bed for little kids.
  • If you want a bathtub, you must book a suite.
  • The Ocean View Terrace Studio Suite is all one room — it has a walk-in closet where you can stash a pack ’n play, but there’s no door.
  • The Ocean View One Bedroom Suite gives you door separation from the living room and the walk-in closet, but does not have outside space; if outside space and door separation is a must, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pu’u Poa Ocean Loft room.
  • Connecting room are the best option for families needing more space (two standard rooms, or suite to standard room).
  • This hotel was previously a St. Regis — but was completely renovated and re-opened as the 1 Hotel in 2023.
  • You have to take a lot of elevators to get around the property, so if you’re in a high-rise room, be prepared for a bit of a trek to the family pool.
  • Overall the vibe is peaceful while still being welcoming to families.

play

  • They have a kids club (Seedlings), but it's for age 6-12 only and is not offered daily. You must reserve in advance (book online here).
  • Your kids may never tire of the heated family pool, and you’ll never tire of the view. There are a couple large shallow sections with seating, perfect for babies and toddlers to splash around.
  • The beach, steps from the family pool, is calm. It’s great if you want to explore tidepools or snorkel, but otherwise it can be a little difficult to navigate the coral. There’s a nearby public beach you can walk to if you want easier swimming. Note: you have to have your own snorkel gear. They sell it ($$), or you can buy it at a local shop on your way in.
  • You can also kayak and stand-up paddleboard from the beach.
  • Free activities include hula classes, tidepool walks, family yoga, art classes, and cultural walks with on-site guides.
  • Teens can tag along on the resort’s eco-adventures — think waterfall hikes and reef snorkels with a sustainability lens. Disk golf is also available.
  • Several days a week, they do a talk about coral reefs down by the ocean — if your kid enjoys learning, they will love this.
  • Resort guests have access to golf, tennis, and pickleball at Princeville Makai.
  • If you need a break from the sun, there’s a game room with board games and ping-pong.
  • You’re an easy drive to the stunning Nā Pali coast and many gorgeous beaches (including Tunnels, which is great for snorkeling).
  • The hotel does not provide babysitting.

eat

  • 1 Kitchen is the main restaurant — open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a rotating local menu. Kids options are available, and the staff is great about off-menu requests.
  • Welina Terrace offers sushi and tropical cocktails with sunset views.
  • Neighbors Café is a coffee shop with grab-and-go items like parfaits, muffins, juice, and wellness shots — great for a beach day or stroller picnic.
  • Wai’oli is a fun stop for Hawaiian shaved ice, soft serve, and gelato — not open every day.
  • Breakfast opens at 7am (in-room dining starts and Neighbors Café opens at 6am if you’re hungry earlier).
  • Make reservations for dinner.
  • You’re a 10-minute drive from the town of Hanalei, which offers several other dining options.
  • Be prepared to spend a lot on food.
